I’ve got The King Cookbook and Alison Roman’s new book on order. I really like the cover of the meatball book and will look into that further. Mimi Thorisson’s books are always beautiful, yet I never cook from them, so I’ll see about that one. Also, Katie Parla’s books are good, but again, I don’t turn to them. I’m trying not to buy all of the books and be more thoughtful in my purchases. I may buy the pickle book, but just as a gag gift for my daughter. We’ll see. I’m absolutely not interested in any of the t.v. Show or video game tie-ins.
I’m so glad that they are rereleasing Entertaining. My copy is pretty beat up. The WaPost ran a feature on it this week, cooking one of the menus, including homemade baguettes! I had to check how old it was: 1982. 40+ years later I think we can apply Ina Garten’s advice that Storebought is Fine in some instances. I pulled my copy out yesterday. It still has good ideas (just adapt them. To start with, we’re not a caterer as she was at the time). And the tablescape porn is as good as ever.
Yes to all of this! And I loved how the Washington Post covered it. What you say about the tablescapes is right on. I need to go back and double-check one of the opening images, but I think there is a bunch of cooked shrimp in a giant kale??
Great round up, thanks! I’m looking forward to the King cookbook.
On another note, I found a Martha Stewart’s, “Hors d’Oeuvres” in my condo’s take-a-book-leave-a-book library … it’s from the 90’s and nostalgically so (hollowed out cucumber slices filled with flavoured goat cheese etc.) I LOVE IT.
Thanks Erin! Based on your affection for the vintage Hors d'Oeuvres book I highly recommend checking out Entertaining. It's so '80s and so over-the-top in places that I laughed out loud. That said, it's also so so impressive. That woman was and is a force.
I’m totally in my old school cookbook era. I’ve recently leafed through an old Woman’s Day cookbook (with the red gingham cover) that my best friend’s mum gave me when I started university.
I grabbed Katie Parla's Rome at Books are Magic the other day (was there to grab Something from Nothing) and it's so beautiful! Actually both are beautiful and I can't wait to cook from them.
The borsch was great - I gave Alison some smoked dried pears and dill salt which I bought back from Kharkiv which are great for making borsch broth. Such a lovely party!
Interesting point about the pasta books. They were probably commissioned during a high inflation period 2-3 years ago. So, makes sense. So nice to see you tonight!
Thanks, Jenna, for keeping us up to date with what's coming out. I am in love with the Meatballs cover—and it pubs on my birthday, I know what I'm asking for this year! And Katie Parla started her own publishing company in 2022, Parla Publishing, which published Rome as well as Food of the Italian Islands (and a favorite of mine, McAtlas, by Gary He). So it is self-published, sorta.
although i mostly eat vegetarian, i am so curious about the meatballs book....and the pickles book also. love them more and more, the older i get. as long as i don t get sour, that ok by me 😅
Jessie, are we going to overlap in Paris again?? I'm going Nov. 12. And I've never eaten at Paul Bert, and I feel like it's too late to get a reservation now...
honey! we are twinning - but this time i leave the 11th . . . i don't know re: paul bert - i just made my res last week? the only tricky bit is you have to make it over the phone . . .

I think you and I have similar taste Ginger!
Okay, so I felt compelled to order Around the World in 80 Meatballs. I do love a meatball and the cover is so great. :)
The heart wants what the heart wants!

That is still a great reference book.
It is.
Now THIS is service journalism. Thank you for compiling this: My holiday shopping just got easier!
Yay! There are some highly giftable options here for sure.

I am interviewing Katie on Monday for this newsletter! I love the design of Rome, so exuberant and packed with info.
I just went to Alison Roman’s book party in London and made the borsch from her book - can’t wait to see the King book! I love Jess and Clare!
How was the borsch? And the party??
The borsch was great - I gave Alison some smoked dried pears and dill salt which I bought back from Kharkiv which are great for making borsch broth. Such a lovely party!
Thanks for sharing these photos! That soup looks incredible. (And smoked dried pears!!)
They have such a powerful flavour! I’ll be able to get some more when I go back to Ukraine later this year
Alison Roman's books have the best titles! Love the green cover too. Also, are all the pasta books a recession indicator...?

You as well, Jenna!

Thanks for the intel on Katie. I’m so impressed by that! And that Meatballs cover…I suspected you would like it 😊

Haha, I am more into sour these days too!
thk you again for this awsome update. i am so happy with your posts!
did not know about the bistro paul bert cookbook - went last year at Dorie's suggestion - and am going in like two weeks when i am back in paris!

Adding the meatball book to my list IMMEDIATELY
That cover is so charming!
This is a great roundup. I am without doubt most excited about The King Cookbook and can’t wait till it arrives.
Thanks Janet! Oh yes, it's a lovely book and coming soon!
