Loved this- Kate is an OG! Also I totally agree with her pick of Company as not getting enough attention. I was totally floored by the quality of Amy's food and recipe writing and her menus were so beautifully composed and inspired. While, I too, have yet to cook from it (need to remedy that!), I felt like I learned a lot - as both a cook and recipe writer- just from reading it.
Oh, love having a new-to-me podcast to add the the queue!
"Trustworthy cookbooks stand the test of time in ways that digital often can't." Yes!
I also appreciate Kate Leahy's perspective on recipes generated by AI. I've been feeling like such a Luddite lately, as most of my coworkers and family seem to think of gen AI as either a toy or some sort of think-for-me tool, but recent experiences have taught me that content (of all kinds, not just recipes) generated by AI is just not as good as the expert-human-made content that was "borrowed" to build it.
And FWIW, I picked up "Masala" this past weekend on a whim because (a) it was on a local author shelf w/ a good review from one of the bookshop folks and (b) it was already on my to-read list because of your recommendation!
I think it somehow got lost in the shuffle. I like everything about it - the recipes, the size, the print, the layout. My favorite recipe is Roasted Spareribs with Crushed Fennel and Red Chiles on Page 258. It's beautiful and, as I said in my comment, useful.
I feel like “Repertoire” by Jessica Battilana didn’t get enough attention! It’s a staple in my kitchen; her harissa chicken recipe is worth the whole cookbook, in my opinion!
Also, Jenna: I dearly love these interviews and also can’t keep up with all the cookbook recs!! So many I keep requesting from my library!! 🤩😆 you do such a great job with the questions you ask.
I feel like we are cookbook twins because I also have big love for Repertoire! AND I also can’t keep up with all the cookbooks 😂. But it’s a worthy goal. Thanks for reading!
What a delightful read! Also tempted to annotate with agree! after agree!
I listened to every episode of Everything Cookbooks while I was working on Hot Date! (it kept me company as I painted late into the night) and really appreciate Kate's thoughtful approach here and on the podcast.
Agreed that restaurant cookbooks can be tricky. It's the rare one that's a keeper! I might need to survey my collection to see how many I actually have.
What a happy surprise to find my bawdy pink bookcover here! Thanks for this, Jenna. (and Kate!) I’m loving your newsletter.
Thanks Victoria! You have lots of fans.
I'm a huge fan of Company, too. And a HUGE fan of Kate!
Ditto on both! Company is just so dreamy
Ditto!

Agree, agree. It's SUCH a special book. Thanks for reading!

Thanks for this thoughtful comment! I'm so glad you picked up Masala. I find the intro and all of the information on Ayurvedic cooking so interesting.
You encouraged me to pull Company off my shelf! Excited to start cooking from it.
Love this! Share what you make please!
Cooking in the Moment by Andrea Reusing is a lovely useful cookbook.
Thank you for this suggestion! I'm not familiar with this book, but will check it out. The cover is beautiful.

Kate is great! She does a fantastic job of simplifying seemingly complex subjects. Thanks for this!
She really does—and she's so thoughtful. I'm grateful to her and the rest of the Everything Cookbooks team!

Ahhhh love this!!! Totally a worthy goal, one we can always be chasing 😍🤩

Thanks Rawaan! That podcast really is so great. I love the team approach to the interviews; the combined level of experience and wisdom is staggering.
Loved getting to know Kate! That A16 cookbook is really so good. Restaurant cookbooks tend to cycle out of my cookbook library, but not that one.

I am loving your Cookbookery Collective! It's like I get to have a quick conversation with someone and get to know them, or know them better.
That's always my goal. Thanks for reading Jimmy!
